Ala. girl to play on high school football team

ODENVILLE, Ala. (AP) - The St. Clair County High School football team is expecting to take on Moody High School with its first-ever female team member.

WBMA-TV reported that 14-year-old St. Clair freshman Kylee Harrell is the first girl in the school's history to play for the football team. Harrell, a former soccer player, is expected to serve as the team's placekicker on Thursday.

Harrell's mother, Sondra Sheats, told the television station she knew Kylee wouldn't be a cheerleader, but didn't think she'd be suiting up to play football either.

Head coach Alan Lee says he first say Harrell playing soccer and thought she'd bring something valuable to the team. He talked about her joining the squad during the offseason, and says she excelled during a summer training camp.
