MT. JULIET, Tenn. -

A Wilson County second grader has been disciplined after bringing a toy gun to school.

According to school officials, the seven-year-old boy brought a plastic gun to Mt. Juliet Elementary School Tuesday morning.

The child reportedly took the toy gun out of his backpack in the gym to trade it for another child's toy.  A teacher spotted it and took the toy gun away.

Nashville's News 2 learned of the incident after being contacted by concerned parents.

A spokesperson told Nashville's News 2 that both of the kids "had been dealt with" but would not elaborate because of the district's privacy policy.

"We have to respond to every single incident. The times are different, much different than when I went to school.  A toy gun at school then wouldn't have meant anything," said Dr. Timothy Setterlund, Director of Wilson County Schools.

According to Wilson County district leaders, the zero tolerance policy did not kick in because it doesn't include look-alike weapons.

A spokesman said the child would not be expelled.

"Parents need to know what their children are bringing to school.  Kids are kids and they don't always make the very best decisions and whether it's toys that look like weapons or whether it's an actual pocket knife that they got from their grandfather and want to show their friends, there are serious consequences that could come from making those poor choices," said Dr. Setterlund.

No students were threatened, according to school officials.

District leaders explained the punishment could have been harsher for an older student who brought a toy gun to school, especially if it was intended to threaten others or convince people the weapon was real.
