Bank at University Center on UT campus robbed

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -

Police are searching for a suspect accused of robbing a credit union inside the University Center on the campus of the University of Tennessee Knoxville, leaving behind a suspicious box.

FBI agents say a man walked into the UT Federal Credit Union, located at 1502 Cumberland Avenue, around 11:30 a.m. Tuesday.

The suspect placed a package on the counter, claimed it was a bomb, and demanded money from employees.

After taking an unknown amount of money, the suspect ran east on Cumberland Avenue.

The suspect is described as a black male, in his late 40s or early 50s, weighing 180 to 190 pounds, and standing around six feet tall.

He was wearing white medical scrubs with a gray striped polo underneath, a black ball cap and one blue latex glove.

The University Center was evacuated for a time, but was reopened around 1 p.m.

The FBI and UT Police are assisting the Knoxville Police Department with the investigation.
