MT. JULIET, Tenn. -

A tractor-trailer caught fire after hitting a retaining wall on Interstate 40 early Monday morning.

The crash occurred around 1:20 a.m., closing down lanes of eastbound I-40 at mile marker 232, the exit for Highway 109 in between Mt. Juliet and Lebanon.

The interstate was already reduced to one lane due to construction when the truck, which was carrying fruit, hit a temporary retaining wall.

The truck remained upright, but ended up in the construction zone.

According to a witness, the crash caused a small explosion and sent stuff flying into the air as the truck burst into flames.

The driver was able to safely escape, but was transported to a nearby hospital with minor injuries.

The driver allegedly told authorities he fell asleep at the wheel.

The roadways were shutdown for two and a half hours while crews cleared the scene.
