ATLANTA -

The 15-year-old boy whose family said he was initially denied a place on the heart transplant waiting list due to "non-compliance" has finally received a new heart.

ABC News reported Anthony Stokes underwent a five-hour heart transplant surgery on Tuesday at 6:15 p.m.

Doctors reversed their decision and kept Stokes on the transplant list on August 13.

He suffered from an enlarged heart and had been given six months live.

However, doctors previously stated in a letter that they decided Stokes was ineligible for the transplant due to his history of "non-compliance."

"They say they don't have any evidence showing that he would take his medicine, and he wouldn't have any follow-up care," his mother said earlier this month.

Doctors were not specific in the letter, but family members said they have been told Stokes did not qualify for the transplant due to his history of bad grades and run-ins with the law.

A spokeswoman at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta at Eglesston, where Stokes is receiving treatment, would not speak to ABC News regarding the case.

However, his family is grateful for the decision that could save their son's life.

"I would like to thank everyone involved, and that we will update throughout the day," Melencia Hamilton, Stokes' mother, said through the family's spokesperson.

The teen is now resting and in recovery.
