Couple robbed at knifepoint in Centennial Park

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -

A couple was sitting on a bench at Centennial Park when they were approached by two men, one of whom was armed with a knife, and robbed.

The crime, dubbed a "crime of opportunity" by police, occurred around 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday.

The suspects stole a wallet and purse before fleeing the scene on foot.

Police said they want people to enjoy themselves in local parks, but it's important to be aware of your surroundings.

"Our parks are extremely safe. We have over 120 different facilities and venues for people to enjoy and engage in. With that said, we've only had a handful of robberies throughout the year," said Metro police Captain Chris Taylor.

People who frequent the park said they were surprised to hear the news.

"A lot people come here of all ages. Elderly people come here; kids, too. I have never felt the least bit uncomfortable here," said Bill Mobbs, who walks through the park daily.

Police tried to find the suspects with a canine, but couldn't track them down.

So far this year, all the park crimes have had something in common.

"Those have been crimes of opportunity, where someone was walking along and a suspect may threaten to take their wallet, so it is not the type of crime where you have a recurring suspect or recurring motive," explained Captain Taylor.

Authorities do not have a good suspect description.  Anyone with information should call Metro police at 615-862-7747.
