Children's library honors long-time volunteer reader

Posted: Updated:

On Wednesday, a long-time volunteer reader was honored by an east Nashville library for her dedication and continued service.

Volunteer Georgeanne Chapman has been reading to children in the Martha O'Bryan neighborhood for more than 50 years.

"There's nothing like seeing a child's eyes light up and them to be curious about something and being able to find it in a book," she told News 2.

During a ribbon cutting ceremony Wednesday, the non-profit organization announced they have named a book collection in Georgeanne's honor.

"They have taught me tremendous kindness, they have taught me that in a world that is scary, there is still joy and hope and love and that love is right here," she said.

Georgeanne added her passion for reading began when she was just 15-years-old.

She said that as a young teen she would load her wagon with books and take them to neighborhood kids and read to them.

"As long as they'll let me stay, I'll stay and read," she said.
