Elected county clerk arrested for theft, misconduct
Mary Jo Matthews, 22
JACKSON COUNTY, Tenn. -
An elected Jackson County clerk was taken into custody on Wednesday for theft and misconduct.
Mary Jo Matthews is accused of taking money from cash receipt drawers several times between December 2011 and April 2013.
Matthews, 22, was confronted by an auditor after she allegedly stole $1,200 in April.
The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation reported Matthews hid a deposit in an effort to conceal the missing money.
Authorities reported Matthews returned the following day to replace the missing money, leaving behind instructions for another clerk in the office to make the deposit in an attempt to hide the discrepancy found by the auditor.
Matthews was booked into the Jackson County Jail on a $2,000 bond.
