MT. PLEASANT, Tenn. -

A 17-year-old senior at Mt. Pleasant High School in Maury County was killed in a single-vehicle crash Friday evening.

Beverly Orban died when her car struck a tree off Highway 166 just outside the city of Mt. Pleasant.

According to a news release, Orban lost control around a curve, causing her to run off the road.

Orban was an active member of her school.  She played on Mt. Pleasant's softball team and was also a football team manager.

Her sister told Nashville's News 2 she wanted to go to the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga and study to become a nurse.

At Mt. Pleasant High School a makeshift memorial, with flowers and expressions of love, was erected over the weekend outside the school near where Beverly parked her car.  By the softball field where she played, red cups stuck in the fence spelled out her name.

Classes were held as scheduled Monday.

In a statement, Dr. John Gunn, the school's principal, said, "School is in session [Monday] at Mt. Pleasant High but the students and teachers are heartbroken over the loss of our own Beverly."

The statement continued, "Our students have grieved and got together on Friday night informally as well as [Sunday] in an impromptu get-together.  Our kids have pretty much been together all weekend.  We've had raw emotion for these last couple of days and feel a little subdued [Monday] at school, but we are shedding tears here [Monday] even though we are maintaining a schedule."

Mt. Pleasant mom Renee Chapman didn't know Beverly but offered a message to other parents of teen drivers.

"I wish the family the best and I'm sorry for them," she said.  "It's a tragedy.  It's something we all learn by.  I sit and I worry every day.  This is the second time my son has had a friend that has been in a wreck that killed them.  I worry every day when he gets behind that wheel.  Is it him that I am going to get that phone call from next?"

State police say Beverly was wearing a seatbelt but the officer noted in his opinion, he didn't think it would have made a difference in the outcome of the crash.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials are made to the Mt. Pleasant High School Athletic Boosters Club, P.O. Box 463, Mt. Pleasant, TN 38474 to benefit the school's field house.

Beverly's funeral will be held Tuesday at 1 p.m. at the First Baptist Church on Pulaski Pike in Columbia.
