Predators hope to limit Chicago fans at Blackhawks game

The Nashville Predators hope to "keep the red out" when the team plays the Chicago Blackhawks at Bridgestone Arena this season.

The Preds will limit the sale of single game tickets for those games, requiring fans to buy tickets for another game as well.

"When we looked at the demand of certain games, we said, ‘Okay these games, we have to reserve tickets for our package holders,'" said Sean Henry, president of the Nashville Predators.

Henry would not say the reason for the change is to limit the number of Blackhawk fans in the stands, but rather said they hope to make it easier for local fans to get the tickets in demand to see the world champion Blackhawks.

"The impact against any one franchise is not our direction. It's to try and add greater value to our fans and further encourage them to buy more games," Henry explained.

He continued, "You can't get to this point unless you have good local demand. And our local demand, again is almost double what it was just a few years ago."

Last April, Chicago Blackhawk fans descended on Nashville for a Saturday afternoon game against the Preds.

Henry said the crowd was about 40% Blackhawk red and any home-ice advantage suffers when fans of opposing teams dominate the stands.

"You want your players to be celebrated the way they should be. You want your goals to be celebrated the way they should be. When the other team scores you want to not hear it so loudly."

The ticket requirement is only for the three home games against the Blackhawks, but Henry told News 2 the practice has become more popular with other teams in the NHL.
