The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation arrested a Macon County man Tuesday night for extorting a Cheatham County woman after his scheme was interrupted by a covert TBI operation.
According to the TBI, William Stewart III, of Lafayette, placed multiple phone calls and sent multiple text messages to the victim claiming that she owed him $500 for smuggling drugs to her brother, an inmate in the Robertson County jail.
Authorities said Stewart, 38, kept telling the victim that she or her elderly mother needed to pay him because he knew where she lived and he was coming to get the money.
Stewart demanded instructions for dropping off the money, which was placed by TBI agents. He was arrested without incident when he retrieved the bag.
Stewart is charged with one count of extortion and booked into the Cheatham County jail.
