Unexpected bridge work closes lanes of I-40, Charlotte Avenue

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -

Unexpected bridge repair work shut down two of the three westbound lanes of Interstate 40 over Charlotte Avenue in downtown Nashville Tuesday afternoon.

The closure stems from emergency bridge deck repairs.

A portion of Charlotte Avenue leaving downtown was also closed, but those lanes have since reopened.

Crews were initially called to the scene Tuesday afternoon after fallen debris was reported on the roadway.

Tennessee Department of Transportation crews remained on the scene late Tuesday night.  Only one lane of I-40 West was open to motorists.

Tuesday's closure comes just one week after TDOT crews had to make immediate repairs after a section of the bridge deck blew out.

"Certainly, with an old bridge and all the loading and everything on it, we've got cracked concrete," TDOT Chief Engineer Paul Degges said, adding, "A lot of rain we've been having recently is certainly accelerating deterioration so we're going to get up there and look things over closely and see if we may need to come in and do an interim repair."

Crews were set to make scheduled repairs to the bridge on Wednesday night.

A complete overhaul of the bridge is scheduled for next summer.
