Thousands of sports fans attend Vanderbilt for 'Dore Jam'

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -

With less than three weeks to go before kicking off the 2013 football season, Vanderbilt University held its annual "Dore Jam" fan event Sunday afternoon.

Now in its eighth year, school officials said it was the largest crowd yet.

Thousands of people packed the practice field for the chance to meet the team, coaches and get autographs.

After the historic nine-win season, Vandy fans are responding to the success.

"We've been to games that had less people than this. So this is a great turnout," Adam Hafner said.

The historic season, however, has been tainted by a scandal off the field. Four football players were kicked off the team this summer.

Brandon Banks, Cory Batey, Jaborian "Tip" McKenzie and Brandon Vandenburg are charged with raping a 21-year-old unconscious female inside of Vandenburg's dorm room at Gillette House during the early morning hours of June 23.

Vanderbilt fans are just hoping to put the turbulent off season to an end.

"I think it just shows what a rabid fan base Vanderbilt has, and I know everybody is concerned about what happened, but everybody has faith in Coach Franklin and he's going to do the right thing, and the university is going to do the right thing. It shows how everybody cares about the school and the football team," said fan Tim Knox.
