Childhood obesity rates drop nationally, rise in Tennessee

Posted: Updated: Aug 7, 2013 09:52 AM

Tennessee's childhood obesity rate has significantly increased.

According to a new report by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, close to half of the 43 states and territories studied showed a decline in childhood obesity.

Another 21 regions showed no statistically significant change, while Colorado, Pennsylvania and Tennessee all showed an increase.

The CDC states that childhood obesity affects 12%, or one in eight, preschoolers in the United States.

Tennessee's rate of childhood obesity is 14.5%.

Those children are five times as likely as normal-weight children to be overweight or obese as adults, which can lead to lifelong physical and mental health issues.
