BARTLETT, Tenn. -

A Shelby County soldier was killed two weeks ago in Afghanistan while supporting Operation Enduring Freedom.

Sergeant Stephen Michael New, of Bartlett, Tennessee, was fatally shot during an attack on his unit on July 28.

New, 29, was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 20th Special Forces Group (Airborne) in Jackson, Mississippi.

His visitation was held at the First Baptist Church in Bartlett from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday.

A graveside funeral service immediately followed at the Memphis Funeral Home and Memorial Gardens.

While family and friends attended funeral services, an overwhelming show of support from the area remained outside with hundreds of people lined up around the funeral home.

Members of the group, the Daughters of the American Revolution, were there to make sure the family could grieve in privacy.

New, a Memphis native, was posthumously promoted to staff sergeant. He will also receive the Tennessee Fallen Heroes Medal.
