WILSON COUNTY, Tenn. -

A Wilson County father and his children were left standing in the dark waiting on a school bus that never came Thursday morning.

Jacob Ashford of Liberty Road in Wilson County voiced his concerns about an earlier bus pick up time and length of travel time in an exclusive interview with Nashville's News 2 on Wednesday.

Ashford was told his son Taylor had to be at the bus stop by 5:20 a.m. to catch his school bus for an hour and a half bus ride to Watertown Elementary, where Taylor is in first grade.

Last school year, the bus came at 5:45 a.m.

"[That time] comes early in the morning, especially on the first day of school when you are six," Ashford said. "Even for me that's early. I am still wiping my eyes at 5:21."

Thursday morning, the first full day of school in Wilson County, Ashford and his two children waited for the school bus at the bus stop but the bus never arrived.

Ashford told Nashville's News 2 that the Wilson County School Transportation Department said the bus driver forgot to pick up Taylor and his sister, who attends Watertown High School.

Ashford eventually drove both of his children to school Thursday. Taylor and his sister rode the bus home Thursday afternoon and the bus driver called and apologized to the family stating she didn't know the children would ride the bus Thursday morning.

Nashville's News 2 spoke with Transportation Director Joshua Hinerman who said his department is currently designing a new bus route for Watertown.

"It will have students getting on the bus at least 5:30, but not before the 5:30 mark," he explained.

The new bus route information is expected to be complete by Friday afternoon.

Parents will be notified and the newer slightly later route is set to begin Monday.

The state of Tennessee mandates a bus ride for students cannot exceed 90 minutes.
