City leaders decide no changes will be made state fairgrounds

City leaders decided on Tuesday no changes will be made to the Tennessee State Fairgrounds off Nolensville Road.

After Mayor Karl Dean's plans to redevelop the south Nashville property failed, the city hired consultants to come up with a new plan.

The consultants were asked "to identify the highest and best mixed-use development scenario" for the fairgrounds "based upon a thorough market analysis."

They approached the master plan for the redevelopment site with the same preliminary due diligences as if they were evaluating a private developer client.

However, after Tuesday's meeting, things will stay the same for now.

The city's attorney, Jon Cooper, said that none of the existing facilities on the fairgrounds can be demolished without 27 votes of approval from the council.

"As long as the existing uses or activities remain, you could add additional activities or development. You just couldn't take anything away," said Cooper.

New development cannot be added without a charter amendment.
