NASHVILLE, Tenn. -

Nashville Mayor Karl Dean will announce the launch of a city-wide anti-violence initiative on Thursday.

The initiative is aimed toward protecting children within Davidson County.

Mayor Dean will be joined by officials from the Martha O'Bryan Center and The Children's Defense Fund to make the announcement.

The Martha O'Bryan Center aims to empower children, youth and adults in poverty to transform their lives through everything from work, education and fellowship.

The Children's Defense Fund is sponsoring an event called The Children's Sabbath, which was created to highlight child safety and encourage community involvement.

The launch of the event in Nashville was prompted, in part, by the murder of 17-year-old Johnathan Johnson at a school bus stop last April.

The local Nashville chapter of Children's Defense Fund can be reached via their Facebook page.
