22-year-old mom charged with leaving infant in car

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -

A 22-year-old mother was arrested Thursday after leaving her six-month-old son unattended in her vehicle.

Police were called to the Walmart Neighborhood Market on North Gallatin Pike around 6 p.m. after a store employee saw the child in the back seat.

The vehicle, parked in a handicap spot, was running at the time and the doors were unlocked.

The child's mother, Keiona Koon, returned about 10 minutes later.

Police determined Koon arrived at the store at 5:15 p.m. after reviewing store surveillance video.

Koon was charged with child neglect and booked into the Metro jail.

The baby was uninjured.

Nashville's News 2 went to Koon's Madison apartment complex where the recent arrest was the talk in the community Friday.

"She should have taken [the kid] with her because you don't know what other people are thinking or how they feel she should of took them with her," neighbor Ashley Everett said.

Other residents said they were shocked and they hope the young mother learns a life-long lesson.
