Pick-up truck slams into tractor-trailer on I-40

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -

A multi-vehicle accident shut down two lanes of Interstate 40 eastbound Thursday morning.

Shortly after 2:30 a.m., a pickup truck collided with a tractor-trailer near mile marker 200, just beyond the Old Hickory Boulevard exit.

The driver of the semi told police he slowed down in anticipation of a construction work zone when the driver of the pickup truck rear-ended his rig.

Construction is ongoing on I-40 near Charlotte Pike. Two lanes were shutdown overnight and the speed limited was reduced while crews worked.

The stretch of highway under construction does not have overhead lighting, but flashing lights, directional signs, and reflective barrels are provided by workers on site.

Thursday's incident extended lane closures before the designated construction zone for another two hours.

It was the second work zone collision to occur in as many days.

On Wednesday morning, a woman crashed into a backhoe in a construction work zone on Concord Road near Interstate 65.

Neither driver suffered serious injuries; however, Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) continuously warns of work zone hazards like changing conditions and sudden stops.

In 2012, twelve people died in construction work zone crashes, nine motorists and three workers.

TDOT offers several resources with construction updates including the agency's Web site, SmartWay App, and overhead message boards on interstates.

The resources contain information on construction zones, work schedules, and alternate routes.

Spring and summer months are considered construction season with optimum weather for crews to work.

Currently, TDOT has at least 11 projects underway on middle Tennessee roadways.
