2 Dollar General employees sue over lunch hours

Posted: Updated: July 4, 2013 6:39 PM CDT

Two Dollar General employees have filed a lawsuit against the nation's largest small-box discount retailer saying they were forced to work unpaid lunch periods in violation of federal law.

The employees, Rachel Buttry and Jennifer Peters, both were supervisors at a Dollar General store in Bulls Gap, outside of Kingsport.

The two allege that the practice is prevalent at other Dollar General stores around the country, including locations in Illinois, Missouri and South Carolina.

The Tennessean reported that the two are seeking class-action status to cover all Dollar General employees in similar positions.

Dan McDonald, communications director for Dollar General, told Nashville's News 2, "From our perspective, we believe we comply with the Fair Labor Standards Act. We certainly deny the allegations and will defend ourselves against the lawsuit."
