A six-year-old girl has died after being accidentally shot by her little brother in Kentucky Sunday morning.
The incident occurred inside a home on Linda Drive in Hopkinsville.
According to police, the girl was shot in the face by her four-year old brother with a .38-caliber pistol owned by the children's grandfather
The young girl was flown to Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville where she died Sunday night.
The shooting remains under investigation. No charges have been filed.
The little girl attended Holiday Elementary School in Hopkinsville where she would have been a first grader this fall.
News of her death spread quickly throughout the community Sunday night.
"Very shocking, very upsetting," said family resource director Karie Pepper. "Losing a child that you've had all year feels like your own."
Teachers and faculty describe the girl as "Very friendly, very loving [and] energetic with a smile on her face everyday."
Pepper said school officials were in touch with the little girl's family and would provide a support system as needed.
