MURFREESBORO, Tenn. -

A controversial novelty shop cleared inspection and opened for business Friday morning.

Body Boutique is located on South Church Street, just off the historic square in Murfreesboro.

"The store is about giving intimacy back to couples, making it very casual, very fun, not creepy," said owner Sarah Baldwin.

The shop has created a bit of controversy, selling intimate novelty items for bachelorettes and bedrooms. Inventory includes costumes, lingerie, body paint and adult toys.

Prior to the shop opening, the city received a complaint stating the shop was a "sexually oriented business," which requires special zoning.

Murfreesboro Public Information Officer Chris Shofner told Nashville's News 2 a city inspector concluded Friday morning that Body Boutique did not violate any zoning laws and could open as scheduled.

Baldwin opened her doors soon after the inspection and welcomed her first customers, including Magnolia Mashburn.

"I like all the big hype about it because it's such a huge deal," Mashburn said. "I don't think it's a big deal at all."

Body Boutique is a side business for Baldwin, a wife and mother who works fulltime.

"I'm taking the stigma out of intimacy," she said.

Baldwin made several changes to meet the requirements of the city and her landlord, but claims she was always mindful of the community.

Her efforts can be seen in her storefront that reveals no more than costume-clad mannequins.

"I covered [the main store space] with curtains. I planned that all along because people might not like this store," she said.

She added, "That way, we're not intruding on their lives and they can still enjoy downtown."

Baldwin hopes the publicity will encourage customers to check out the store for themselves.

Mashburn knows customers like her will ultimately decide the shop's fate.

"If people don't like it, if people don't come in and it doesn't work, then it closes," she said "And if it does work, then there's your answer. I guess it works fine on the square."

Following Friday's inspection and business opening, Baldwin has 21 days to apply for her business license.

Body Boutique is open Monday through Thursday 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., Friday and Saturday 11 a.m. to midnight and Sunday Noon to 6 p.m.
