CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. -
Neighbors near a daycare were left speechless when they learned someone broke in and doused it with gasoline.
The incident occurred at the VCDC 24-hour daycare center on Vista Lane in Clarksville.
Police told Nashville's News 2 a new employee showed up for her first day of work on Tuesday morning and immediately spotted trouble.
The employee reported that when she arrived to the facility the door was already unlocked and upon entering the daycare center she smelled gasoline and noticed an open window with the screen pried off.
Upon their arrival, police found gasoline poured on the floors and other items of evidence.
Police did not elaborate on the evidence or if the person tried to ignite the gasoline.
"That's insane. I don't know why anyone would want to catch a daycare on fire," nearby resident and mother Jessica O'Neill said, adding, "I'm just glad nobody was inside."
Resident and mother of three Tammy Ewings added, "It just kind of blows me away. I don't really know what to say. I hope they catch whoever done it."
Police said they have a suspect in the incident. The investigation is ongoing.
Nashville's News 2 reached out to the daycare's owner however those calls were not immediately returned.
No children were at the daycare at the time of the incident.
Anyone with information on the attempted arson attempt is urged to contact Clarksville police at 931-645-TIPS.
