A new business is scheduled to open Friday on the Murfreesboro Town Square and it has people talking.Body Boutique, an adult sexual oriented store, carrying lingerie, body paint and sex toys, is opening on the historic square. The owner, Sarah Baldwin, has been bringing in boxes and stocking the shelves primarily in the evenings, said Randy Smotherman, who runs 'Smotherman Antiques' two doors down from the store.
Smotherman told Nashville's News 2 he's unhappy that an adult-oriented sex store is opening on the Square.
"We just want to make people feel welcome, whole families welcome, and I'm afraid that's something we could lose," he said.
Baldwin has not filed for a business license, but Murfreesboro doesn't require one until 20 days after opening.A city ordinance regulates adult-oriented businesses on Mufreesboro's town square.
Items of a sexual nature cannot make up more than 20% of a store's revenue or inventory.
"Of course they haven't finished stocking, but if they were to open today, yes they're over 20%," said Smotherman.
On Wednesday, dozens of people stopped in front of the store out of curiosity.
A mother walking with her child moved away from the store front as they passed by.
"They shouldn't have to shield their children from something on the downtown square," said Smotherman. "It's a home town. I grew up here, and it's always been a very wholesome place."
A city ordinance regulates adult oriented businesses on the square. Inventory, revenue or floor space can not make up more than 20% of the business. The city planner will inspect Body Boutique on Friday, and if it meets those requirements, it can open later in the day. While some people feel the store may too explicit for this small town, others don't see what the fuss is all about.
