Man waved at engineer before being hit by train

Posted:

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (AP) - Johnson City police say a homeless man who was struck and killed by a train waived at the engineer just before he was hit.

The Johnson City Press reported the train crew saw 50-year-old Larvern Wampler sitting beside the CSX Transportation tracks Saturday night. When the engineer sounded the horn, the police report said, Wampler threw up a hand, which the crew took to mean he was clear of the tracks.

Investigator Justin Adams said the crew then heard a thud as they passed Wampler, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

Adams said police were familiar with Wampler, who lived or slept near the tracks in the area where he was killed.

Adams called Wampler's death a sad situation and said there is no indication anyone pushed him toward the train.
