Fire officials in Rutherford County are investigating a fire that destroyed at Civil War era home late Saturday night.
The house on Sulphur Springs Road caught fire just before Midnight Saturday.
Owners of the home told Nashville's News 2 it served as a hospital during the Civil War.
History experts believe the house was built in the 1820s or 1830s.
The family that lived in the home was out of town when the fire started.
Neighbors say they heard a loud pop before seeing the sky turn red with flames.
Colleen Sweeton, who has lived across the street for about 17 years, says her family heard ammunition inside the house exploding from the heat.
"All the pine and the beautiful wood inside just went up like a match," Sweeton said.
The current owners have lived in the house for about four years.
Officials have not yet released the cause of the fire.
