LA VERGNE, Tenn. -

A La Vergne man critically injured after being struck by a vehicle while walking home from work has been released from the hospital.

Charlie Wilkes was walking across Murfreesboro Road when the accident occurred on June 5.

The 56-year-old man lost his arm in the incident and will now have to find a new way to make a living.

"[I] thank God for being here. I could have been on the other side. I guess I was dead a few times. They had to shock me to bring me back," Charlie told Nashville's News 2.

He continued, "I'm not worried about my limb. My love for my grandkids and my wife is a big inspiration and that should be everyone's big inspiration

Surrounded by his three grandchildren and loving wife Carmalita, Charlie told Nashville's News 2 he couldn't die because he has too much to live for.

"I think it was the love for my family, but first I think it was God. I think He has something else for me to do," Charlie explained.

He added, "I get a little teared up now, because, it could have taken me away from my people. My grandkids don't deserve that. My wife doesn't deserve that."

Charlie told Nashville's News 2 he does not remember a lot about the crash, but he vividly remembers the ferocious impact with the car.

"I can remember his eyes. Our eyes met," he recalled.

Charlie and his wife both added that he was not chasing his hat across the street at the time of the accident despite previous reports.

The driver of the car involved in the accident has not been charged, however the case is still open.

An account to help the Wilkes family has been established at SunTrust Bank under the "Charles Wilkes Benefit Fund."
