Authorities said they were alerted to a fire at a Fairview asphalt plant located on Highway 96 by a citizen Friday afternoon. The citizen quickly called emergency crews after seeing flames coming from the plant, which officials said has been shut down for two weeks.As a precaution several homes in the area were evacuated and Highway 96 was closed to motorists. Homeowners have since been allowed to return to their homes. The roadway reopened to motorists around 4:30 p.m. The cause of the fire was not immediately known.
