Mt. Juliet PD connects with citizens via Facebook

MT. JULIET, Tenn. -

Facebook is a place to find friends, share photos and in many parts of Middle Tennessee, fight crime.

In Mt. Juliet, Facebook has become a big part of the community connection strategy.

Sergeant Tyler Chandler updates Facebook regularly with community events, safety messages and crimes.

"It does help fight crime. You know any way that we can inform the public and get information out about ongoing crimes in our community or current crimes that are currently happening to keep everyone safe. It helps us tremendously and it keeps everyone safe," Sgt. Chandler told Nashville's News 2.

The page recently hit more than 3,000 likes, but Sgt. Chandler says the Facebook posts reach more than 37,000 people a week.

The most popular post to date occurred when the area was hit by a tornado, and the community relied on the page for updates directly affecting their safety.

"We wanted our public to be aware that we did have a touchdown in Mt. Juliet and just to stay away from the area because obviously with a tornado touch down there is debris everywhere. Power lines down, possible gas leaks with the buildings that were hit, and they needed to stay away. But it also allowed us to ease peoples minds," Chandler explained.

The police department also decided to host a monthly gathering, "Coffee with a Cop." It's an invitation for citizens to grab a cup of coffee and voice concerns in a friendly environment or just meet their leaders face to face.

"I think it's real nice that they have an event like this because I have lived in cities where you never got a chance to know our police department unless you were in the back of their car, and I just thought this was great. It's a great chance to get to chat about nothing. I got no complaint but I just thought it would be great to chat,"said Mt. Juliet resident Jim Kelly.

The Mt. Juliet Police Department says they plan to host "Coffee with a Cop" the third Friday of every month at various locations.
