NASHVILLE, Tenn. -

Families, friends, supporters and survivors laced up their sneakers and dashed for Dad on Saturday.

The 'Dash for Dads 5K' is part of the ZERO Prostate Cancer Challenge, which is the premier men's health event series in America that is traveling to more than three-dozen cities across the nation this year.

This race brings together athletes, doctors, cancer survivors and those who care about them to end prostate cancer.

All proceeds go to funding free screenings in the Nashville area.

"One in five men have or will be detected with prostate cancer, but 99 percent of those detected if it's detected early they can be cured," Anne Phillips with Urology Associates told Nashville's News 2.

Since 2008, ‘ZERO' has provided more than 50,000 free tests and provided more than one million dollars toward local prostate cancer programs and research.

Nashville's News 2's Davis Nolan, a cancer survivor, was emcee for the event.

Michael Benson is also a survivor. He says early detection is key. "Had I caught it earlier I wouldn't have had to go through what I went through but at least I'm alive and well and here."
