KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -

University of Tennessee athletics have not achieved much success on the gridiron, court or diamond this year, but its athletes performance in the classroom may be a bigger problem for the university.

The Vols have a ranking of 924 in academic progress measured over the past four years by the NCAA, which ranks dead last in the SEC.

Schools must have a ranking of 900 to avoid penalties.

Next year, the minimum ranking jumps to 930 to measure eligibility, retaining students and graduation.

Today in a statement, Chancellor Jimmy Cheek said that the Vols have done everything to address the issues with the football program.

Tennessee football players averaged a 2.8 grade point average this spring under new coach Butch Jones.

The GPA is the program's highest for a spring semester since the school started measuring it by each individual sport in 2003.
