Liaison named to monitor convicts after release

Posted:

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (AP) - Weeks after a Chattanooga woman was slain by a convict who was supposed to be supervised after his release, state officials have named a court liaison who will assure such monitoring takes place.

Police say Terry Lee Releford fatally beat his pregnant wife to death and raped a 15-year-old girl last month before killing himself. Although state law stipulated that Releford should be supervised for life after serving most of a 17-year sentence for rape and assault, there was a paperwork mistake.

The Chattanooga Times Free Press  cited a June 3 letter by Correction Commissioner Derrick Schofield that says Davidson County Community Corrections Program Director Mickie Daughtery will fill the position. The letter says Daughtery will work with courts around the state to assure that offenders have the appropriate supervision.
