NASHVILLE, Tenn. -

A man who witnessed a pedestrian being struck by a vehicle earlier this week may have saved the victim's life with is quick thinking.

Charles Wilkes of La Vergne was walking across Murfreesboro Road around 5 p.m. Wednesday when he was hit by a car.

Rick Elam said he saw the incident occur and he immediately stopped to render aid.

"This guy went 15 to 20 feet in the air. He did a one and a half summersault," Elam said. "As soon as I got out of the car I knew he needed help. He was bleeding profusely, so I took off my belt and made a tourniquet."

According to Elam, Wilkes was just about across the roadway when his baseball hat blew off.

Wilkes raced back to get it, and into the way of an on coming car.

"Nobody was willing to help; it was gruesome sight. I knew he would bleed to death. Blood was literally squirting four feet in the air. His left arm was injured all the way down. It looked horrible," Elam recalled.

Wilkes remains hospitalized at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in critical condition; however Elam said he would like to eventually like to meet the 56-year-old man.

The driver who struck Wilkes was not cited in the incident.
