NASHVILLE, Tenn. -

A 16-year-old died from his injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident Thursday night.

According to police, the accident involving Michael Battle occurred just before 7:30 p.m.

Officials reported Battle was thrown from his motorcycle when he lost control while jumping railroad tracks on Chestnut Street near 4th Avenue South.

He was not wearing a helmet at the time of the accident. Police added marijuana was found on Battles.

It has not been determined if he was under the influence of an intoxicant at the time of the crash.

Battle was transported to Vanderbilt University Medical Center where be died just after 8 a.m. Friday.

Investigators said Battle was riding the motorcycle with another person who fled the scene following the accident.

Prior to police arrival, a black SUV came along and loaded the crashed motorcycle onto the back of the vehicle. The motorist also fled the scene.

Authorities were able to locate the second motorcyclist late Thursday night.

During an interview, the 23-year-old said that he fled the scene because he was scared, which also led him to conceal the crashed motorcycle that Battle was driving.

The motorcycle was recovered Friday afternoon at the home of the 23-year-old's mother.

Police said a decision on whether or not charges will be filed will be made after consulting with the District Attorney's office.

Those who knew the boy were shocked and saddened to learn of his death.

"Everybody who knew him loved him. He was just a good, pleasant person to be around," said Frank Stevenson, Pastor of St. Luke Primitive Baptist Church.

Battle attended McGavock High School.

He loved to play basketball.

The family does not have health insurance. Funds can be donated at St. Luke Primitive Baptist Church on Lewis Street or at Terrell Broady Funeral Home.
