NASHVILLE, Tenn. -

The College Football Hall of Fame inducted its first Middle Tennessee State Blue Raider.

James "Boots "Donnelly was announced as one of three coaches to be inducted into this year's College Football Hall of Fame class on Thursday.

Donnelly led the Blue Raiders to nine top 20 regular season finishes and seven NCAA I-AA playoff appearances during his 20 year coaching career at MTSU.

He won the Ohio Valley Conference title five times and the OVC coach of the year award four times.

A defensive back at MTSU from 1962-64, Donnelly led the Blue Raiders to a conference championship and a Grantland Rice Bowl victory in 1964.

He then eventually accepted the head coaching position at Austin Peay State in 1977 before going on to coach the Blue Raiders in 1979.

Donnelly later served as MTSU athletic director for three years where he played an important role in moving the University to the FBS.

Donnelly currently serves as the CEO of the Backfield in Motion organization, which combines academics and athletics to inspire inner city boys to reach their maximum potential.

The 2013 College Football Hall of Fame Class is scheduled to be honored this August in Atlanta, Ga, during the Enshrinement ceremonies in August.
