Boat show to display Tennessee's largest houseboats

SMITHVILLE, Tenn. -

Some of Middle Tennessee's largest houseboats will be on display in Smithville this weekend at the 3rd annual Pates Ford On-the-Water Boat Show.

Attendees can hop aboard boats that range in price from $50,000 to $250,000.

For years, the boat industry was hit hard by the economic downturn, but Tony Ashley of Middle Tennessee Houseboat Sales told Nashville's News 2 those rough days have been left in the wake.

"In the last year, really the last 8 months, we've seen a really rebound in the industry. Interest rates dropped to below anything I've seen since 2004,-2005" Ashley said. "Some of the manufacturers unfortunately met their demise during the economic times. But everything is vastly rebounding. And we've seen a pickup in the market in just the last two or three months."

In addition to the massive houseboats, jet-skis are on the water, and most impressive are wakeboard boats.

"Wakeboard boats are much different than regular sport boats because you can surf behind them", explains Andrew Tantrum of TNT Water Sports in Hendersonville.

"Half the amount of boats that I sell per year are for surfing as much as wakeboarding" he added.

The Pates Ford Boat Show runs Saturday starting at 10 a.m. and on Sunday beginning at 11 a.m.

Pates Ford is located on Center Hill Lake in Smithville.
