NASHVILLE, Tenn. -

Demolition has begun on the old tennis clubhouse at the Centennial Sportsplex to make room for a $3 million dollar fitness center facility.

Metro Parks officials said the new two-story fitness tennis complex will fit the needs of the growing Midtown community.

"The sportsplex opened in 1990, so it's 23 years old and it's time for some new buildings, new construction and a facelift," said Rick Taylor with the Metro Parks Department.

It will feature an indoor running track, space for group classes, strength training, a tennis pro shop and locker rooms.

"Currently our fitness facility is about 2,000 square feet and we just don't have enough space, so with the amount of customers we have we need to expand to around 8,000 square feet," Taylor added.

According to Metro Parks officials, the project has been in the works for many years, but one that has had to wait.

It comes at a time when new apartment complexes are being built and will bring hundreds of new residents to the area.
