Metro Schools won't get additional $44M they requested

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -

Metro Nashville Public Schools won't be getting the additional $44 million it requested for the 2013/2014 school year.

A budget hearing was held tonight at the Nashville council chambers.

Without the additional funding, the district may lose jobs.

Several things were discussed to figure out a way to make up for the funds that the school board wanted and did not receive.

One of them is cutting up to 40 positions from Metro school's central office.

They may not be teaching positions, but board members said the impact will be felt in the classroom.

Without the additional funding, Metro Schools' budget would be around $720 million.

The school board had also hoped the increased funds would have given teacher and school employees pay raises and helped the district open five new charter schools.

Board members will pick up this discussion June 9.
