Councilman has heart attack, drives himself to hospital

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - A Clarksville councilman drove himself to the hospital after realizing he was having a heart attack.

Councilman Jeff Burkhart told The Leaf-Chronicle he awoke Sunday morning and figured out what was happening.

Burkhart says he knew he had the ability to drive himself to Gateway Medical Center and did so around 3 a.m. CDT without waking his wife or family.

Doctors worked quickly and placed a stint in Burkhart's heart by 5 a.m. CDT.

Burkhart said he is expecting to be released from Gateway on Wednesday and is thankful that he was able to catch the heart attack fast enough.

Burkhart says: "It did minimal damage and hopefully everything will come back.
