Downtown YMCA only gym in state to offer Hydrocycle

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -

A new fitness craze has taken hold of Nashville.

Hydrocycle, also known as underwater spinning, has a serious following at the Downtown YMCA, the only facility in the state that offers the class.

"The first initial reaction is, 'You put the bike where?'" said instructor Colleen Cussick as she tossed the Italian-made bike into the pool.

"You're getting cardio and weight training combined because the way to the water is consistently compressing against every movement you make," said Cussick.

According to Cussick, Hydrocycle can burn up to 600 calories an hour.

Gyms in New York City charge up to $40 per class, but Hyrocycle is included in the Downtown Nashville, or city-wide, YMCA membership.

The diverse group of regulars includes experienced athletes, newcomers to exercise, as well as those who require low impact exercise.

"We have so much fun," said Heather Bogdal, who has been hydrocycling for the past two and a half years.

"It is a great workout. We have a great time and it's almost like family."

The downtown YMCA offers hydrocycle Saturday though Thursday.

Interested students can reserve a bike up to 24 hours in advance.
