Some object to distribution of Bibles at school

Posted:

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (AP) - Some parents are objecting to Bibles being distributed at a Chattanooga elementary school.

The Chattanooga Times Free Press reports it began when parent Mitzi Yates found a slip in her fifth-grader's backpack asking whether her child had permission to bring home a Gideon New Testament. She says she objected to the books being sent home even if parents agreed.

Activist Tommy Coleman, who also has a child at McConnell Elementary, says he agrees with Yates and is trying to get help from national organizations such as the Freedom From Religion Foundation to keep Bibles out of schools.

School board attorney Scott Bennett says the district has an all-or-nothing policy. For instance, if a principal allows the Boy Scouts to distribute literature, then so can Gideons, Catholics, and Muslims.
