Golden's exit doesn't change Vols' expectations

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Tennessee coach Cuonzo Martin doesn't believe the expectations for his team should change even after the transfer of Trae Golden, which leaves the Volunteers without a lot of experience at point guard.

Martin expects incoming freshman Darius Thompson to get the first chance to take over as the Vols' main point guard, a role Golden held the last two seasons. Thompson, a 6-foot-4 combo guard recruited by Tennessee to play the point, signed with the Vols last month.

Tennessee's lone returning pure point guard is walk-on Brandon Lopez.

Tennessee announced Tuesday that Golden was transferring. A person familiar with the situation told The Associated Press Wednesday his departure was due to academic problems. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the university hasn't announced why Golden is transferring.
