ROGERSVILLE, Tenn. -

A Rogersville man was charged with his fifth DUI offense on Saturday after he allegedly told police he had consumed as many as 48 beers throughout the day.

According to Kingsport Time News, Andy Derrick was pulled over just before 7:30 p.m. after an officer patrolling the area noticed two vehicles stopped in a turn lane on Hugh B. Day Bridge.

The patrolling officer approached the second vehicle where the motorist said it appeared as if the driver in the other vehicle appeared to be asleep.

The officer then approached Derrick's 1998 Ford Escort and told him to pull over into a nearby parking lot.

After being asked to step out of his vehicle, Derrick, 36, reportedly smelled of alcohol, had slurred speech and was allegedly unsteady on his feet when he got out of his car.

The responding officer reported Derrick told him he "had 12, 14, 24 or 48 beers to drink."

Derrick was taken into custody after he reportedly performed poorly on a field sobriety test.

He is charged with his fifth DUI offense, driving on a revoked license and violation of the implied consent law.

He has since been released from jail on bond.
