NASHVILLE, Tenn. -

A 55-year-old man was killed in a single vehicle crash near Vanderbilt University in Nashville Sunday morning.

Police reported Terry Ford was traveling over the speed limit in a Honda Insight on 21st Avenue without his headlights around 3:15 a.m. when officers attempted to pull him over.

The officer activated his blue lights but Ford did not stop.

Ford continued near the same speed for approximately three tenths of a mile before losing control where 21st Avenue turns into Broadway.

Ford's car struck a brick planter and went airborne before coming to rest in a parking garage.

Ford, who was wearing his seatbelt, was pronounced dead at the scene.

It remains unclear what caused Ford to lose control of his vehicle.

Police said there was no physical evidence of alcohol or drug involvement at the scene.

The medical examiner will conduct toxicology testing to determine whether alcohol or drugs played a role.
