DAVIDSON COUNTY, Tenn. -

A man was convicted on Friday of a murder that happened more than 30 years ago.

Freddie Johnson, 62, was convicted of felony murder in the strangling death of 72-year-old Hermitage resident Ethel Hethcote in January 1979.

Reports explained that Johnson had been working in the victim's home installing insulation prior to her murder.

The Metro Police Cold Case Unit reexamined evidence and found a fingerprint tying Johnson to the murder.

That evidence along with statements he made to the police and interviews with other witnesses resulted in his arrest in February 2012.

Johnson is also a registered sex offender after being convicted of rape in 1979 in Mississippi.

His new conviction of felony murder carries a sentence of life in prison.
