NASHVILLE, Tenn. -

A 13-year-old boy was seriously injured after being hit by a train Tuesday night in south Nashville.

Metro police responded to the call around 8:30 p.m. at the intersection of Arlington Avenue and Elm Hill Pike, near the Greenwood Cemetery.

Police told Nashville's News 2 the teen was walking on the tracks when the train struck him.

Authorities reported the engineer sounded the train's horn several times and that the teen responded by lifting his hand, looking over his shoulder and crossing onto the tracks the train was on.

The minor was rushed to Vanderbilt University Medical Center with life-threatening injuries and was last listed in critical condition.

CSX Corporation told Nashville's News 2 the train was traveling from Cincinnati to Nashville. It was carrying 80 freight cars.
