Routine check lands Sylvan Park man in federal custody for child porn

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -

A routine check of a convicted sex offender landed a Sylvan Park man in federal custody earlier this week.

Members of the Federal Bureau of Investigation and Metro's Sex Crimes Unit arrested Jerry Tidwell for child porn Wednesday morning.

During the routine check, sources said Tidwell was asked what was on his computer. The 41-year-old man reportedly replied, "Porn."

Authorities seized his computers and later found more than 500,000 images and 45,000 videos of possible child pornography.

Court papers indicate that Tidwell admitted to spending eight to 10 hours per day on his computer searching for pornography.

"It's disturbing. Very disturbing. It's disgusting," neighbor Rich Elder said.

"I knew he was a registered sex offender, but I had no idea what was actually going on," he continued. "[He's] very quiet, kept to himself. Didn't really talk to anybody. [I've] never had a problem out of him. It's the quiet ones you have to watch."

Neighbors added they are glad authorities are doing regular checks on sex offenders.

"It seems like they are doing their job. It's cool to see that happen," Carson Ponce told Nashville's News 2.

Elder added, "It's great. Fantastic that they are staying on top of these people."

Tidwell remains in custody and is being held without bond.
