Columbia police have located the mother of a toddler who was found wandering alone in the street Thursday morning. The boy, who lives with his mother and grandparents, was found in front of a home on East Eighth Street by a man who was walking to his car around 7:30 a.m.
"He just came out of the blue and we don't know where his parents are at or nothing," the man told a 911 dispatcher.
Unable to locate the child's parents, police began to go door to door searching for his family.
A neighbor eventually recognized the little boy and told authorities where he lived.
"They did not know the child was missing," said Lt. Joey Gideon with the Columbia Police Dept.
The boy's mother was in bed asleep at their home located on Mapleash Avenue and had no idea her child had been missing for almost four hours. The grandparents said they thought the child was sleeping.
The toddler is believed to have gotten out of the house through a window in his bedroom.
The case is being investigated as possible aggravated child neglect.
