NASHVILLE, Tenn. -

Bassist Robert Todd Harrell of the rock band 3 Doors Down remains behind bars after a deadly crash over the weekend.

Late Friday night Paul Howard Shoulders, Jr. was driving his 2003 Ford F-150 pickup truck westbound on Interstate 40 just east of Nashville.

Police said his car was clipped by Harrell's 2011 Cadillac CTS, which was travelling at a high rate of speed.

The pickup struck a guardrail, travelled down an embankment and overturned.

Shoulders was transported to Vanderbilt University Medical Center where he died shortly after.

Investigators said Harrell admitted he had been drinking and taken prescription drugs Lortab and Xanax.

"I was very surprised," said John McTigue, who lived next door to Shoulders for many years.

Neighbors say Shoulders was friendly and always willing to help out.

"He worked on cars," McTigue said. "He was a mechanic. Sometimes he'd fix my car the cars of several of the other neighbors here."

3 Doors Down issued a statement of condolences on the band's Web site.

The band has also canceled four upcoming concerts, one of them scheduled for Nashville.

A court hearing for Robert Todd Harrell has been set for Thursday.

Harrell is charged with vehicular homicide by intoxication and bringing controlled substances into the jail.

During a search at the booking room, Davidson County Sheriff's deputies discovered a plastic bag concealed in his sock that contained eight Xanax pills, 24 Oxycodone pills and four Oxymorphone pills.

Harrell is jailed in lieu of $100,000 bond.
